Yesterday I was reminded of something subtle – but incredibly impactful. I shared an exciting idea with my wife. The kind that carries energy, possibility, and forward movement. And almost instinctively, she started raising all the potential obstacles.
It was then that I reminded her about the secret of flow.
When an opportunity or a great idea presents itself, putting obstacles in the way slows down momentum. Instead of blocking the idea, give it space to expand. It’s like a flowing river when it meets an obstacle – it continues and gains momentum instead of stopping because of obstacles in its way. It has no choice but to continue moving.
Here’s another example. When business slows down or there’s a recession, the obvious choice is to cut marketing budgets. In fact, the opposite is true. It’s at this time that your organisation should amp up advertising and marketing because recessions don’t last forever, and when business picks up, your company will reap the benefits.
At VETTA, we speak about the importance of creating flow before friction. When ideas are given space, the conversation gains momentum, and the idea starts to take shape. This is the magic of flow.
A simple but powerful practice you can try:
When a new idea or opportunity is shared, ask yourself,
“Am I adding flow, or blocking the process?”
Sometimes the smallest shift – from obstacle to flow – is what allows something meaningful to emerge.
